Cleaning an engagement ring

When it comes to keeping your engagement ring in peak condition, cleaning it correctly is necessary. You will always want to avoid ultrasonic cleaners as they can loosen gemstones. You’ll feel good when your ring is clean because it will catch the light like it’s brand new. Here are some tips from your custom jewelry Omaha experts on cleaning engagement rings with diamonds and other popular stones!

Diamond engagement ring

You can always take your diamond ring to a jeweler for professional cleaning, and every so often you should. We recommend getting it professionally cleaned twice a year. However, it’s nice to know how to clean your diamond ring at home, and cleaning it once a week will help keep oils, residues and other buildup away. A ring you wear every day can get perfume, lotion and makeup on it. This at-home cleaning process will ensure its sparkle:

  1. Fill a bowl with very warm water and add dishwashing soap. Never use bleach, chlorine, acetone, toothpaste, baking soda or powdered cleaners, as they’ll scratch and damage the ring.

  2. Soak the ring in the bowl for 20 to 40 minutes.

  3. Use a very soft toothbrush to gently brush the diamond.

  4. Rinse the ring off under warm running water. Be sure to use a sink stopper as a precaution.

  5. Finally, use a cotton cloth or let the ring air dry. Avoid paper towels as they can leave a film residue on the ring.

Sapphire engagement ring

Sapphires are a popular alternative to diamond engagement rings because they are suitable for everyday wear. Sapphires are sensitive, and even mild acids like lemon juice and hand sanitizer can damage the gemstone. Buildup of any kind can make the stone look dull, so we recommend cleaning it at home once every three to four months and taking it to a jeweler for professional cleaning every six months. If you ever question cleaning the ring, take it to a professional.

The process for cleaning sapphire rings is the same as diamonds, but you can use dishwashing soap or another mild soap of your choice. Proper cleaning will keep it looking brand new for years to come!

Emerald engagement ring

Emeralds are a great choice for engagement rings, as well. They are a bit more fragile than diamonds and sapphires, but still suitable for everyday wear. Emeralds will look good for a long time, especially if you care for them well.

The process is similar to the above steps, but you will want to wipe off the ring with a soft micro-fiber cloth first to get any buildup off. You will also want to use lukewarm water, rather than really warm water because emeralds are sensitive to heat. You can wipe the gemstone off with a soft cloth up to three times a week or as needed.

Morganite engagement ring

Morganite as a gemstone for engagement rings is another popular option after sapphire. Morganite can collect oils and get cloudy if not cleaned properly. We recommend taking off your morganite ring when doing household cleaning as the gemstone is sensitive to these products. Also take it off when putting on lotion, as it will dim the shine.

The cleaning process is the same as the diamond, but you can use a blow dryer on low heat to dry it rather than a cotton cloth or letting it sit until air dry. Take it to a professional to have it cleaned annually.
