Guide to colored gemstones

There are so many different gemstones in an abundance of different colors. It can be good to know the hardness of each gem, especially if you’re interested in creating custom gems Omaha or a unique engagement ring! The harder a gem is on the Mohs scale, the more durable your piece of jewelry will be. Below we have listed some of the most popular gemstones by color, each with their hardness.

Reds

The color red is known to symbolize love and passion. We commonly see red in Madeira citrine, Mozambique garnets, rubies and blazing red topaz. The months of January, July and November have red birthstones.

Madeira citrine comes in at 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, and its color ranges from medium to dark red to brown. The Mozambique garnet is a 7 to 7.5, and it's a dark, reddish brown. Rubies are a 9 and they’re pinkish red. Blazing red topaz is an 8, and it’s the purest red-colored gemstone.

Pinks

Pink symbolizes femininity and compassion. The pink gemstones are morganite, pink tourmaline, pink sapphire, champagne sapphire, padparadscha sapphire, pink spinel, baby pink passion topaz and pure pink mystic topaz. August, September, October and November have pink birthstones.

Morganite has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 and is a light to medium shade of pink. Pink tourmaline is a 7 to 7.5 and is colored medium pink. Pink sapphire is a 9 and is medium pink in color. Champagne sapphire is a 9 and has a peachy pink hue. Padparadscha sapphire is a 9 and is a pinkish orange. Pink spinel is an 8 and is a medium pink color. Baby pink passion topaz is an 8 and is the lightest pink gemstone. Pure mystic topaz is an 8 and is the pinkest of all gemstones.

Oranges

Orange is a symbol of positive emotions and optimism. Typical orange gemstones are citrine, sunrise mystic topaz, passion poppy topaz, fire opal, spessartite garnet and peach morganite. October has an orange birthstone.

Citrine is a 7 on the Mohs scale and is yellowish orange. Sunrise mystic topaz is an 8 and looks just like the sunrise with yellow, orange and pink hues. Passion poppy topaz is an 8 and is a medium to dark orange color. Fire opal is a 5 to 6.6, and its color is a very dark orange, sometimes with red hues. Spessartite garnets are 7 to 7.5 and are a medium to yellowish orange. Peach morganite is 7.5 to 8 and is a peachy pink color.

Yellows

Yellow is often associated with happiness and energy. The canary diamond, lemon quartz, honey passion topaz and yellow sapphire are a few common yellow gemstones. April has a yellow birthstone.

The canary diamond is a 10 on the Mohs scale and is a very light yellow diamond. Lemon quartz is a 7 and is a slightly greenish yellow. The honey passion topaz is an 8 and is an orangish yellow. The yellow sapphire is a 9 and is the purest yellow gemstone.

Greens

Green is the color of harmony and safety. Green gemstones include the well-known emerald, rainforest passion topaz, tsavorite garnet, alexandrite, green tourmaline, peridot and moldavite. May, June and August have green birthstones.

The emerald comes in at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale and is medium green. Rainforest passion topaz is an 8 and is bluish green. Tsavorite garnets are 7 to 7.5 and are yellowish-green. Alexandrite is an 8.5 and ranges from light green to a greenish blue. Green tourmaline is a 7 to 7.5 and is dark yellowish green. Peridot is a 6.5 to 7 and is a pretty shade of lime green. Moldavite is a 5.5 and is a greenish brown.

Blues

Blue symbolizes trust and loyalty. Blue sapphires, aquamarine, kashmir passion topaz, Swiss blue topaz, sky blue topaz, ice blue passion topaz, passion paraiba topaz and London blue topaz are all blue gemstones. March has a blue birthstone.

Blue sapphires have a hardness of 9 and are a royal, dark blue. Aquamarines are 7.5 to 8 and are a shade of light blue. Kashmir passion topaz is an 8 and is bright blue. Swiss blue topaz is an 8 and is a medium to dark shade of bright blue. Sky blue topaz is an 8 and is light blue like the sky on a nice, sunny day. Ice blue passion topaz is an 8 and is light to medium blue. Passion paraiba topaz is an 8 and is a greenish blue. London blue topaz is an 8 and is a grayish blue.

Purples

Purple typically means imagination and spirituality. Purple gemstones are alexandrite, amethyst, volcanic passion topaz, mystic topaz, tanzanite and iolite. February and December have purple gemstones.

Alexandrite is an 8.5 on the Mohs scale and is purplish red. Amethysts are the most popular purple crystal with a 7 on the hardness scale and range from light purple to a deep, dark purple. Volcanic passion topaz is an 8 and is a medium purple. Mystic topaz is an 8 and is light green with purple. Tanzanite is a 6 to 7 and is a blueish purple. Iolite is a 7 to 7.5 and is grayish purple.

Multiple colors

Crystals with multiple colors symbolize truth and hope. The shade of a gem like Alexandrite can look different depending on the lighting. White opals, salt and pepper diamonds and moonstones all have multiple colors in them as well. October has a birthstone with multiple colors.

Alexandrites are an 8.5 when it comes to hardness, and they look greenish blue in the day, but at night look purplish red. White opals are 5 to 6.5 and have a white background with multiple colors. The salt and pepper diamond is a 10, and they have white, gray and black in them. Moonstones are 6 to 6.25 and are semi-translucent with pink and blue colorations.

Whites

White most often means purity and perfection. White gemstones are diamonds, white sapphires, white topaz and forever one morganite. April has a white birthstone.

Diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale, and they’re colorless. White sapphires are a 9, and they’re near colorless. White topaz is an 8, and they’re colorless and sometimes slightly gray. Forever one morganite is a 9.25 and colorless as well.

Blacks

Black is the color of determination and sophistication. Black gemstones include the black diamond, black spinel, black onyx and black tourmaline. There is not a black birthstone for any month. 

Black diamonds are a 10 in hardness, and they’re pure black to opaque black. Black spinel is an 8, and they’re opaque black. Black onyx is 6.5 to 7 and pure black. Black tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 and also pure black.
